Miner Jailed 25 Years for Murdering Mentally Ill Man

 

A 25-year-old miner from Village 7, Domborutinhira, Penhalonga, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted of murdering a mentally ill man from the same community.

The High Court sitting in Mutare heard that Tendai Afonzo, who was armed with an okapi knife, carried out a vicious and unprovoked attack on Luckmore Dziire at Domborutinhira Business Centre on October 1, 2024.

Dziire, who was known in the area as a mental health patient, was stabbed multiple times during the assault. A post-mortem examination later confirmed that he died from hypovolemic shock as a result of severe blood loss.

The court was told that Dziire’s body was discovered lying in a pool of blood on a shop veranda by local revellers.

In passing sentence, the court considered the seriousness of the offence and its impact on the community before imposing a 25-year custodial term.
