The Zimbabwe Republic Police have postponed the burial of 12-year-old Prudence Mhangami who died after consuming some mushrooms.
In a statement, police said Prudence’s relatives were not bothered to report the case to the police which the force had to learn about through social media.
“The ZRP is concerned that Prudence Mhangami’s relatives intended to bury her without a post mortem being conducted, as such the police had no option but to stop the burial process to allow the post mortem to be conducted,” the ZRP said in a statement.
Prudence, along with two other young girls, Leona Zarura, 2 years and 8months and Mazvita Taderera, 1year and 8months died due to the poisoning while Tatenda Mhangami, 9, and Tendai Mhangami, 7, survived after being treated at Sally Mugabe Hospital in Harare.
According to police reports, the post mortem conducted on the bodies of Leona and Mazvita show that death was due to mushroom poisoning whilst post mortem for Prudence is yet to be received.
The victims, who were staying with their grandparents, consumed some mushroom which were picked by Prudence on January 10 from a neighbouring homestead.
Prudence was reportedly warned against cooking the mushroom by her grandfather.
Police have urged parents and guardians to monitor the food being consumed by their children in order to safeguard their lives.
They also urge traditional leaders, school authorities and the community to educate both adults and the youths on the dangers of picking mushrooms in the bushes.
