Motorists in Borrowdale are currently being stopped at a police roadblock where officers are pulling over top-of-the-range vehicles such as Toyota Land Cruisers, Prados and Land Rover Discoverys, demanding import receipts with officials from the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority verifying vehicle import documentation.
The officials are reportedly stopping most luxury and high-end vehicles and requesting proof of importation, including receipts and other documentation, while also checking registration details.
The operation comes as the Zimbabwe Republic Police says it has launched a nationwide crackdown targeting vehicles without registration plates and those fitted with illegal sirens, blue lights and other unauthorised gadgets.
In a press statement issued on March 10, police confirmed that the operation is already underway across the country.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that a nationwide operation is currently underway targeting vehicles moving on the roads without registration number plates and those illegally fitted with sirens, blue lights, bar lights, beacons and other unauthorised gadgets,” the police said.
Authorities said the operation covers all types of vehicles.

“The operation covers all categories of vehicles, including family cars, company vehicles, government vehicles and public service vehicles,” the police said.
Police also raised concern that some motorists deliberately remove number plates to evade identification after committing crimes or traffic violations.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has noted with concern that some motorists are deliberately removing number plates to evade identification after committing offences such as armed robberies, kidnapping, hit-and-run road traffic accidents, as well as traffic violations including driving against the flow of traffic, through red traffic lights and lane violations,” the statement reads.
The police added that the illegal installation of sirens and blue lights, which are reserved for emergency vehicles, is creating confusion on the roads.
“Some vehicles are being fitted with illegal sirens, blue lights and bar lights which are reserved for authorised emergency vehicles.
This causes chaos on the roads,” the police said.
Authorities warned that vehicles without registration plates will be impounded immediately until proper registration is completed.
“The Police advises the public that all plateless vehicles will be impounded forthwith and will only be released once proper registration process is completed,” the ZRP said.
