Two Foreign Nationals Arrested Over US$1.5 Million Mining Fraud

 

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has arrested two foreign nationals in connection with a fraud and externalisation of funds case in which another investor was allegedly duped of US$1.5 million in a mining investment deal.

In a statement, police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed that the suspects were apprehended on March 14 at the Norton Tollgate while travelling in a black Lexus SUV.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of a foreign national in connection with cases of fraud and externalisation of funds in which another foreign investor was allegedly duped of USD 1 500 000.00 in a mining investment deal,” Nyathi said.

According to police, the suspect was travelling with three other individuals at the time of arrest.

“The suspect was arrested on 14th March 2026 at Norton Tollgate while travelling in a black Lexus SUV in the company of three other individuals,” Nyathi said.

Following the arrest, police conducted a search of the vehicle and recovered prepared dagga.

“Upon arrest, police conducted a search into the vehicle leading to the recovery of prepared dagga,” Nyathi added.

Investigators later carried out a search at the suspect’s residence in Borrowdale, Harare, where they recovered suspected gold nuggets.

“A subsequent search at the suspect’s residence in Borrowdale, Harare, led to the recovery of approximately 10 grammes of suspected gold nuggets,” Nyathi said.

Police said they are currently verifying whether the suspect has the relevant permit to possess the recovered gold.

Authorities have urged members of the public, particularly investors, to exercise caution when entering into mining deals.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges members of the public, particularly investors, to conduct thorough due diligence and verify ownership of mining claims with relevant authorities before entering into any transactions,” Nyathi said.
