Lupane Man Jailed 20 Years for Killing Grandfather, 77

A 30-year-old man from Manasa Village in Lupane has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the brutal murder of his 77-year-old grandfather, Gibson Sibanda, in a case that has shocked the community.

Obey Ncube (30) was convicted of murder by the High Court Circuit sitting in Hwange.

On June 27, 2025, Ncube repeatedly struck Sibanda with a knobkerrie and the metal handle of an ox-drawn plough inside a hut at their homestead.

The attack, witnessed by Ncube’s mother and wife, left Sibanda with severe injuries.

Ncube then ordered the elderly man to pack his belongings and leave the homestead, later claiming that he had taken him to St Paul’s Mission Hospital.

However, Sibanda’s body was discovered near a bridge on July 2, 2025, prompting a police investigation.

In his defence, Ncube claimed he was provoked, alleging that Sibanda was practising witchcraft against him.

He told the court he had found Sibanda preparing herbs intended to harm him spiritually, which led to the fatal assault.

The court rejected the defence and found Ncube guilty of murder, sentencing him to 20 years imprisonment.
