“Lantso” Plots Redemption Path as “Mayhem at the Market 3” Showdown Looms

Phiri (R) faces off with Masamba in SA Friday

Zimbabwe’s leading lightweight contender Aliyah Phiri returns to the international spotlight on Saturday night when he faces Japan-based South African John Masamba in an eight-round non-title bout on a card aptly dubbed “Mayhem at the Market 3.”

The contest, set for the picturesque Taroko Farm Modderfontein Reserve, is promoted by Assegai Boxing and is expected to draw significant regional attention, with live broadcasts scheduled on SABC3 and Vision View TV.

For Phiri, the bout represents more than just another fight—it is a critical step in rebuilding a career once marked by continental success and global promise.

The Zimbabwean, who boasts a record of 8 wins (5 by knockout) against 3 defeats, is a former African Boxing Union champion whose reign was cut short after testing positive for a prohibited substance.

Following a brief suspension, the lightweight southpaw has returned with renewed focus, intent on reclaiming his place among Africa’s elite.

Fighting under Otto Boxing and trained by his brother Ali, Phiri has steadily rebuilt momentum. His last outing, a victory over Malawi’s Osgood Kayuni in Chivhu in November, reaffirmed his credentials as one of Zimbabwe’s most promising exports.

And experience may prove pivotal on Saturday. “Lantso” (as he is affectionately known) has shared the ring with eight foreign opponents, including Namibia’s highly touted Harry Simon Jnr, who entered their bout unbeaten at 20-0. Although Phiri emerged victorious that night, the result was later ruled a no-contest following protests from the Namibian camp over technical irregularities—an episode that remains a contentious footnote in his career.

Across the ring stands an opponent of a different profile but equal intrigue. Masamba, unbeaten in three professional fights, is carving his path from an unlikely base in Osaka, Japan. Despite his limited record, the South African has demonstrated composure and ambition beyond his experience level.

His most notable victory came against Mexico’s Luis Millan, a seasoned campaigner with a 32-9 record, who was unable to halt Masamba’s rise. The win signalled the emergence of a fighter keen to test himself against more established opposition.

Saturday’s encounter thus presents a compelling narrative: a seasoned contender seeking redemption against an unbeaten challenger determined to protect his perfect record.

Importantly for Phiri, victory would reinforce his resurgence and re-establish him as Zimbabwe’s foremost lightweight talent on the international stage while for Masamba, an upset would serve as a statement of intent, potentially accelerating his ascent within the competitive lightweight division.
