Harare Rolls Out Smart Water Meters to Boost Water Supply

The City of Harare, in partnership with Helcraw Water Pvt Ltd, has installed at least 26,000 smart water meters across the city, with the aim of improving water supply and reducing wastage.

The initiative, which involves replacing old water pipes with new ones, is expected to benefit residents by providing them with accurate billing and reducing water losses.

"We welcome this initiative," said Yvone  Seketi, a resident of Aspindale Park. "We've been struggling with water shortages for years, and this is a step in the right direction. With the smart meters, we'll be able to monitor our usage and pay for what we actually use."

The smart water meters are prepaid, allowing residents to top up their accounts and avoid surprise bills.

"I've already seen a reduction in my water bill," said Ms. Chimwemwe, another resident. "It's a great feeling to know exactly how much water I'm using and paying for it. It's also encouraging me to conserve water."

The City of Harare's partnership with Helcraw Water Pvt Ltd has been praised by residents, who say it's a welcome change from the old system.

"The old system was prone to leaks and wastage," said Mrs. Banda, a local businesswoman. "With the smart meters, we can identify leaks quickly and fix them. It's a win-win for everyone."

The initiative is part of the city's efforts to improve water supply and reduce losses. According to officials, the smart water meters will help to identify areas of high consumption and reduce water theft.

The installation of smart water meters is expected to continue across the city, with more residents expected to benefit from the initiative.
