Fears are growing that a typhoid outbreak has hit Masvingo following the hospitalisation of 17 people recently.

Typhoid is a bacterial infection caused by water-borne fever which is caused by bacterium Salmonella typhi.

No comment could be obtained from the Provincial Medical Director, Dr Amadeus Shamhu as his mobile phone was not reachable.

However, sources said the number might have ballooned to over 29 to date.

Acute shortages of potable water, which have been worsened by recurrent power outages as well as lack of proper sanitation in Victoria Ranch and surrounding areas are the key contributors to the spread of the infection.

Spokesperson for Masvingo City Council, Ashley Jinjika, said the local authority was doing its best to supply clean water to the city’s residents.
“Our water supply has vastly improved. We are trying our best to supply clean water to our residents,” said Jinjika.
