Man Uses Forged ID to Access NMB Bank Account

 

An Epworth man allegedly used a forged national identity card bearing his photograph but another customer’s details to fraudulently obtain a bank card and later attempted to unlock the account at a Harare bank.

Admire Chisadza, 23, of Epworth Extension, appeared before magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai at the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing forgery charges.

The court heard that Chisadza approached NMB Bank employee Marshet Mangena at the NMB Bank Joina City branch pretending to be account holder Christopher Dembezeko.

Prosecutors allege that on April 1, 2026, at around 2:40pm, the accused tendered a certified photocopy of a national identity card bearing his photograph but carrying Dembezeko’s personal details, enabling him to obtain a bank card.

The accused allegedly returned to the bank on April 24, 2026 seeking assistance to unlock the same account, claiming it had been blocked after funds were reportedly stolen by an unknown person.

On the same day, the court heard, he submitted a signed letter accompanied by passport-size photographs while continuing to impersonate the legitimate account holder.

Bank officials became suspicious and contacted Dembezeko to verify the account details, exposing the alleged fraud.

Security personnel were alerted and apprehended the accused, while CCTV footage allegedly confirmed that he was the same individual who had earlier collected the bank card.

The court heard that the accused allegedly attempted to deceive the bank using forged documents, including the previously submitted national identity card.
