Big Three Stumble as Title Race Heats Up Ahead of Harare Derby

It was a difficult weekend for Zimbabwean football’s traditional giants — Dynamos, Caps United, and Highlanders — as all three failed to secure maximum points in Matchday 10, tightening the early-season title race.

Highlanders were held to a goalless draw by Agama, managing only a single point in a match where they struggled to break down their opponents. Dynamos, meanwhile, suffered their first defeat of the 2026 campaign, going down 2-1 to Chicken Inn in Bulawayo. Caps United also endured a setback, registering their second loss of the season after falling 1-0 to Bulawayo Chiefs, following an earlier defeat to Ngezi Platinum Stars.

Reacting to Dynamos’ defeat, head coach Genesis Mangombe admitted his side had a poor start.

“It was a difficult game, but in the first half we started on a bad note. We were slow in our build-up and we invited our opponents into our own half,” he said. “We made avoidable mistakes in our own half and we conceded from those. We need to improve when we play games like this.”

Caps United coach Takesure Chiragwi also reflected on missed chances following his team’s defeat.

“It was the result of the day that we need to take a lesson from. If we get chances, we have to use them,” he said.

Elsewhere, defending champions Scottland saw their unbeaten run come to an end after a 2-1 loss to 2024 champions Simba Bhora. Coach Norman Mapeza remained calm despite the defeat.

“It’s football, and this is the day we had been waiting for,” he said.

In other fixtures, TelOne secured their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Triangle United. The breakthrough result comes shortly after the departure of coach Jampano, who had gone nine matches without a win.

Attention now shifts to the highly anticipated Harare Derby at Rufaro Stadium, where log leaders Caps United will face Dynamos.

Caps United will aim to maintain their position at the summit, especially with Hardrock closing the gap to just a single point. Dynamos, meanwhile, will see the encounter as a crucial opportunity to strengthen their push for a top-four finish.
