Khanye Eyes Botswana Move in Pursuit of Top-Flight Dream

Bulawayo-born defender Freedom Khanye is preparing to take a decisive step in pursuit of his professional football ambitions, with plans to move to Botswana in search of a long-awaited breakthrough into top-flight football.

Born in 2002 and raised in Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, Khanye has faced a challenging journey despite showing promise as a centre-back in the Southern Region Soccer League. The defender has struggled to secure a place in Zimbabwe’s Premier Soccer League, prompting him to explore opportunities beyond the country’s borders.

“I will leave Zimbabwe for Botswana to pursue my football career. Maybe I might get the chance to play in the top flight,” Khanye said.

This will not be his first attempt to break into Botswana’s football scene. He previously travelled to the neighbouring country seeking trials but arrived after the transfer window had closed, ending his chances at the time. With the next registration period expected to open in June, Khanye remains optimistic that persistence will finally yield results.

“I was given hope that if I come in June, I might be lucky and get signed,” he added.

Khanye featured for Mountain Climbers in 2023 before joining Eagle Life in 2024. He currently captains First Mobile Soccer Academy, where he continues to develop his game while awaiting another opportunity abroad.

The defender also revealed that contractual limitations have previously blocked potential moves within Zimbabwe. He had hoped to secure a transfer to a Division One side but could not reach an agreement due to contract duration requirements.

“I wanted to play in Division One, but they refused to sign me because their contracts run for a year, while I only needed six months,” he said.

Should the Botswana move materialise, Khanye would follow a growing path taken by Zimbabwean players seeking opportunities in regional leagues. Fellow Zimbabwean Author Sibanda is currently playing top-flight football with Tonota FC after initially joining the club on loan from Chegutu Pirates and helping them secure promotion before earning a permanent contract.

For Khanye, the upcoming transfer window represents more than another trial—it is a chance to transform potential into progress and finally establish himself on a bigger stage.
