Zimbabwe, Pfizer Advance Health Partnership

Zimbabwe has moved to deepen cooperation with global pharmaceutical giant Pfizer under the “Accord for a Healthier World” initiative, as government pushes to improve access to medicines, vaccines and healthcare system capacity.

On the sidelines of the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, Health and Child Care Minister Douglas Mombeshora met Pfizer officials to discuss implementation of a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding focused on strengthening Zimbabwe’s healthcare delivery systems.

According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care Zimbabwe, discussions centred on expanding access to critical medical products while supporting broader reforms within the country’s health sector.

“Their discussion centered on implementing the recently signed MOU under the 'Accord for a Healthier World' initiative,” the ministry said in a statement.

“This partnership aims to provide Zimbabwe with essential, not-for-profit medicines and vaccines while simultaneously upgrading the country's medical supply chains, regulatory frameworks and healthcare worker training programs.”

The engagement comes as Zimbabwe continues efforts to rebuild and modernise its healthcare system following years of economic constraints, infrastructure challenges and periodic shortages of medicines and medical equipment.

Government has increasingly turned toward international partnerships to strengthen pharmaceutical access, improve disease response capacity and modernise healthcare logistics systems, particularly after lessons drawn from the COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in global and domestic health supply chains.

Pfizer launched the Accord for a Healthier World initiative to expand access to medicines and vaccines in lower-income countries by offering products on a not-for-profit basis while supporting healthcare system strengthening initiatives.

For Zimbabwe, the partnership could help address persistent challenges related to medicine availability, supply chain efficiency and workforce development, particularly in public health institutions that continue to face resource limitations.
