For players, the most immediate and personal change in the 2026/27 Laws of the Game is not about VAR, offside technology, or even penalties, it is the moment they are taken off the pitch.
Under the new update from the International Football Association Board (IFAB), substituted players will now have just ten seconds to leave the field once the referee signals the change. What was once a loosely managed transition, often used to slow the game down, acknowledge fans, or drag out valuable seconds has become a strictly timed exit.
The message is simple: once your number is up, you leave immediately.

If a player exceeds the ten-second limit, the substitution is not cancelled, but the consequences shift sharply onto the timing of the match. The incoming substitute must wait until the next stoppage after one minute of play has passed before stepping onto the field. The outgoing player is still required to leave, but they risk being cautioned if the delay is considered excessive and affects the restart.
From a player’s perspective, this changes the emotional rhythm of being substituted. The walk off the pitch, often used to acknowledge supporters, receive instructions or simply take time after a tiring performance has effectively been compressed into a sprint like discipline of efficiency. Even small delays, like tying laces, exchanging high fives or drifting slowly toward the touchline, now carry tactical risk.
The rule sits within a wider effort by lawmakers to speed up the modern game but this particular change hits closest to the players themselves.
For coaches it introduces a new layer of discipline. Players will need to be prepared not just tactically but behaviourally trained for substitution amd ready to exit instantly without hesitation or ceremony.
