UZ fires lecturer Mungwari over sex scandal

The University of Zimbabwe has suspended media lecturer Dr Teddy Mungwari over accusations of demanding sex from female students in exchange of distinctions.

Mungwari, who was also fired from the Chinhoyi University of Technology after committing a similar offence, was reportedly exposed by a female student whom he sent a WhatsApp message asking her for sex in return for a distinction.

The student turned Mungwari down and took the matter up with the authorities in the Department of Creative Studies, under which Media Studies falls.

Mungwari went through a disciplinary hearing after the student handed over a screenshot and a letter to the institution.

“Dr Mungwari approached me saying that he wants sex with me, and I turned him down”, she said.

Mungwari said he wanted to have sex with the student because his wife is in South Africa, according to a leaked WhatsApp message.

A source from the institution said that Mungwari has been barred from conducting lessons until the matter is finalised.

“Since we have contracts, we wait for recommendations of the panel which is conducting the disciplinary hearing,” a source at the institution said.

Mungwari could not be reached for comment at the time of writing.
