Several Gweru home seekers reportedly lost over US$41000 to Greynut Investment, a land development company, whose owner is now on the run.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the alleged fraud in which different people were duped of various amounts of money amounting to US$41 978 before the director of Greynut Investment disappeared.
Insp Mahoko said in a statement that sometime in February 2018, the victims paid amounts ranging from US$485 to $7690 as instalments for residential stands from Greynut Investments Company, which was jointly owned by Jameson Museke and Isaiah Mudzengi.
Mudzengi died in 2021.
Insp Mahoko said the home seekers later grouped after a series of fake promises to deliver the residential stands, but were then told the company did not have any stands for them, leading to them filing a report with the police.
This prompted Museke to run away and he has not been located since then.
Insp Mahoko appealed to members of the public to report to the nearest police station if they have information on Museke’s whereabouts.
“Police are appealing to those with information that may assist in locating and apprehension of Jameson Museke to pass it to Gweru Central Police or any nearest police station,” Insp Mahoko said.
