Mobile Registry outreach slotted ahead of voter registration

The Civil Registry Department will soon roll out a mobile registration exercise ahead of voter registration for the 2023 harmonised elections, the minister responsible has said.

“The Government is set to embark on a mop-up mobile registration exercise to issue national identity cards and birth certificates to people who are yet to get the documents. This follows a successful exercise that we carried out last year where three million documents were issued with documents,” Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister, Kazembe Kazembe.

He said that issuance for all primary documents: national identity documents, birth and death certificates- will be done for free during the mobile outreach.

This will give opportunity for Zimbabweans to not only regularise their identity papers, but also register to vote for the upcoming elections.

“The mop-up registration exercise will be done before the elections to ensure everyone entitled to the documents is eligible for voter registration,” said Minister Kazembe.

Last year’s six-month mobile registration was oversubscribed with 3 million documents issued against a target of 2 million.

Minister Kazembe said that conditions for procuring requisite papers are relaxed during mobile outreaches to make sure that no one is left out.
