An 18-year-old barber from Chikanga in Mutare has been sentenced to 10 months in jail after he was found guilty of having sexual intercourse with a minor.
Laston Mutasa, 18, who is married, was convicted by Mutare magistrate Perseverance Makala but his sentence was commuted to 175 hours of community service at Chikanga Police Station.
Mutasa had consensual sexual intercourse with the minor, who is in Form One at a Mutare school, several times from September 2022 to January 2023.
The court heard that Mutasa, who is a barber at Chikomo Bus Stop in Chikanga, proposed love to the minor in December 2021 and the two began dating.
They then started having sexual intercourse in September last year.
The two would reportedly meet at the barber shop when Mutasa closed shop at 5pm.
The matter came to light on January 4, this year after the minor failed to return home after spending the night at the barber shop.
The girl’s mother quizzed her and she told her that she was dating Mutasa and had spent the night at his barber shop.
A report was filed at Chikanga Police Station, leading to Mutasa’s arrest.
