Two serving members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police and their two unemployed accomplices on Saturday appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court facing armed robbery charges.
The suspects, Walter Chanhuhwa, 41, of ZRP Highfield, Emmanuel Dzingwe, 30, of ZRP Epworth, Egypt Musundire, 30, and Tongai Chikumba, 30, appeared before magistrate Stanford Mambanje and were remanded in custody.
Mambanje advised them to approach the High Court for bail due to the seriousness of the offence they are facing.
The suspects were represented by Emmanuel Samundombe.
The court heard that on February 26 this year at around 2:30pm, the accused, in the company of their two accomplices who are still at large, drove a Toyota Grand white in colour with no registration numbers, and proceeded to Vijay Balan’s residence.
Musundire was armed with a pistol, while the other suspects were armed with iron bars.
When they arrived at the gate, they hooted for attention and Muthusamy Raju went to the gate to investigate.
When Raju discovered that they were all male adults, he enquired on their mission, an inquiry which they did not respond to.
Musundire, Chikumba and the two other suspects forced open the small gate to gain entry into the yard.
They manhandled Raju, frog-marched him to the house where they confronted Syed Yaseen who was repairing a truck on the premises.
They then handcuffed the complainants, ordering them to lie on the floor in one of the rooms that is used as an office.
They searched the complainants and took away their cellphones.
They then commandeered Balan to his bedroom and demanded money but Balan said he had no money after which the accused persons threatened to shoot him
Balan, out of fear, later showed them a box which had US$3 000 and 5 000 Indian rupees.
Two other complainants namely Chandrasekhar Mudupu and Sathish Bokka arrived in a silver Toyota Mark X, intending to check on the progress made by Yaseen, who is their mechanic.
They saw the accused’s getaway motor vehicle parked at the gate with one Dzingwe behind the steering wheel. Dzingwe reversed from the gate, allowing Mudupu to drive in.
Chanhuhwa confronted Mudupu and Bokka and searched them before taking away their cellphones.
They then removed the CCTV DVR, before leaving the premises.
A report was made at ZRP Kopje.
Indications by the accused led to the recovery of four cellhone pouches in a maize field near the Kuwadzana traffic circle, along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway.
