The Premier Soccer League has said the start of the 2023 soccer season on March 18 will go ahead as scheduled despite the unavailability of some stadiums that are either condemned or under renovation.
This comes as the Colliery Stadium in Hwange, Ascot Stadium in Gweru, Simba Bhora’s Shamva home ground, Vengere Stadium in Rusape, Sakubva in Mutare, Nyamhunga Stadium in Kariba, Greenfuel’s home ground in Chisumbanje, all failed to meet the requirements to host topflight matches.
As a result, some teams will play their opening matches of the season at home away from home as they will be required to use alternative venues.
PSL chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele said that they hope to see that the stadiums will be ready when the season commences.
“We will play our games as scheduled. Our hope is that those facilities that are going through work will be completed before the next round of stadium inspections.
“Otherwise, we’re good to go and clubs are encouraged to make sure that they complete the registration of their players by Friday, March 17,” Ndebele said.
In Harare, the National Sports Stadium is the only venue cleared for PSL games while newboys Greenfuel have already indicated that they will use Triangle’s Gibbo Stadium for their opening matches until renovations at Chisumbanje’s Greenfuel Arena Stadium.
