Bester and his colleague Zimbabwean smugglers were also involved in a gunfight with soldiers guarding the Beitbridge border post where they were forced to ditch their car and run on foot. One of the smugglers was injured during the shootout.

The car was impounded and remained at the border for months. According to The "Sunday Independent" Bester had faked his death to escape from the Mangaung maximum security prison in Bloemfontein with the help of officials.

The baby's mother said the woman speaks Shona and English and she is in her 20s.

“She told me her name is Shame Ncube, but I doubt it is her real name," the mother said.

When she got home, the mother found the baby in the care of her neighbours and when she went into her own house, she discovered that it was empty.
