Zimstats records increase in offences committed in 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2022

The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency recorded a 12% increase in offences committed - from 185,660 recorded in the 3rd Quarter to 208,027 recorded in the 4th Quarter for 2022.

Acts against public safety and state security had the highest rate at 89 775 offences recorded with a 591.5 percent rate followed by acts against property only with 50 459 offences recorded with a 332.4 percent rate.

Thirty nine thousand five hundred and fifteen offences leading to harm or intending to cause harm to the person had a 260.3 percent rate.

“There were 89 775 offences committed against public safety and state security, with a crime rate of 591.4. This implies that for every 100 000 population 319 people were victims of intentional homicide in the fourth quarter of 2022. The intentional homicide rate was 2.1 victims per 100 000 population,” ZimStat said.

Three hundred and ninety eight people were victims of non-intentional homicide with a 2.6 percent rate while 328 were victims of attempted intentional homicide with a recorded percentage of 2.2.

The Agency also recorded a 34.5 percent rate of unlawful acts involving alcohol, tobacco or other controlled substances with 5 250 recorded offences.

“Unlawful acts involving alcohol, tobacco or other controlled substances are the most frequent of the acts involving controlled drugs or other psychoactive substances. The rate for unlawful acts involving alcohol, tobacco and other controlled substances was 3.6 times that of unlawful acts involving controlled drugs or precursors,” ZimStat noted.

A 1 370.5 national crime rate was recorded for the fourth quarter with Bulawayo having the highest crime rate recorded at 3, 134.5  followed by Harare with a 2, 116.9 crime rate.
