Timboom Bus Company owner, Tinoziva Tsvangirai, has availed ZWL2.5 million to assist victims of a road traffic accident which involved one of his buses so they can meet medical expenses and help support the families of the deceased.

The accident, which occurred in Chivhu on Sunday morning, claimed the lives of more than a dozen people and left others nursing injuries.

According to police, thirteen people died, and 40 sustained injuries, of which 27 were treated and discharged while eight are still admitted at Chivhu Hospital. Five were transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital.

In a statement, Tsvangirai said the company will do its best to ensure that the deceased get a befitting send-off.

“With a profound feeling of grief and sorrow, Timboom Coaches’ management and staff hereby condole the families of the people who perished in the horrific crash involving one of our buses on April 16, 2023, in Chivhu district. Our prayers and thoughts are with the families of the deceased.

“As we continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities in their quest to establish the cause of the catastrophic accident which has so far claimed 13 lives, we would like to pledge our full support to the bereaved families.

“We will do our utmost best to ensure that their dear departed get a befitting send-off while at the same time taking active steps to avoid the recurrence of such an accident,” he said.

One of the survivors, Chrispen Makonese said he was thrown out of the bus.

“When we approached a curve, just before the accident occurred, the bus swerved to the right, and in that instant, the driver tried to control it, and it made another to the left.

“The bus then swerved again to the right and it veered off the road. Also, the weather was bad. It was showering and misty and speeding was not a good idea.

“I just found myself lying on the ground, outside the bus, injured. Other passengers were also outside, some were unconscious, while others were crying, it was just a horrific sight, I do not know how I came outside the bus, but I guess I was thrown outside the window.

“I injured my right hand, and I am in pain, but I thank God I am alive,” he said.
