The extent to which drug abuse has become rampant in the rank and file of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service is worrisome with Commissioner General Moses Chihobvu confirming dismissal of officers associated with the vice.
Speaking at the inaugural C.G golf tournament held at Hillside Golf Club in Mutare last week C-G Chihobvu said:
“The issue of drug and substance abuse is not only a cause for concern to offenders who would have been brought to our prisons, but even my officers have joined the bandwagon. We have a challenge with drugs in our society.
“We should take this issue of tackling drugs seriously, and as for my organisation we are off-loading officers abusing drugs. This is not the solution as those who would be offloaded from the force have families to be looked after.”
At the same occasion, Big Rock Chief Executive Officer chief executive Blessing Mangwiro pledged US$10 000 to rehabilitate drug abusers in Manicaland through the ZPCS office.
“This is a fund I am unveiling through the Manicaland ZPCS office, and this money will be disbursed the way they see fit. The most affected people are young women, girls and men in Sakubva. Our communities are lacking the social fabric that brings the oneness,” said Mangwiro.
