Inmate Dies at Chikurubi Farm Prison, Investigation Launched

 

Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service has confirmed the death of an inmate at Chikurubi Farm Prison, with authorities launching a full investigation following allegations circulating on social media.

In a statement issued on March 25, 2026, ZPCS said the inmate, identified as Gift Mbowa, died in the early hours of March 20 while serving a 12-month sentence.

“The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) wishes to inform the public of an unfortunate incident involving the death of an inmate at Chikurubi Farm Prison in the early hours of 20 March 2026,” the statement read.

According to the correctional service, Mbowa reportedly complained of chest pains during the night before he was later discovered unresponsive in his cell.

“The deceased, Gift Mbowa (185/26), was serving a 12-month sentence. He reportedly complained of chest pains during the night and was later discovered unresponsive in his cell at approximately 0300 hours,” ZPCS said.

Authorities acknowledged reports circulating online suggesting the death may have resulted from assault but said the matter is now under independent investigation.

“The ZPCS acknowledges with concern reports circulating on social media alleging that the death may have been linked to assault. We take such allegations with the utmost seriousness,” the statement said.

“In line with our commitment to accountability, transparency and the protection of all persons in our custody, a full and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has been instituted.”

ZPCS reaffirmed its commitment to upholding human rights standards and professional conduct within correctional facilities.

“ZPCS remains firmly committed to upholding human rights, maintaining professional conduct among its officers and ensuring the safety and welfare of all inmates under its care. Any conduct found to be inconsistent with these standards will be dealt with decisively in accordance with the law,” the Service said.

The correctional authority urged members of the public to avoid speculation while investigations are ongoing.

“We urge members of the public to refrain from speculation and allow the investigative processes to proceed unhindered. The Service will continue to provide updates as more verified information becomes available.”

ZPCS confirmed that the family of the deceased inmate has been notified and extended condolences following the incident.
