A-41-year-old man from Mukwasi Village under Chief Serima in Gutu was on Wednesday sentenced to 20 years in prison by Masvingo Regional magistrate Bishard Chineka for raping a seven-year-old girl.
Gilbert Shonhayi will effectively serve 16 years.
It is alleged that the grandfather caught Shonhayi raping the minor, name withheld, on December 27, 2022, around 2: 30pm.
He recovered a used condom from the back of the house where Shonhayi was committing the offence.
Prosecutor Innocent Mudzingwa told the court that the girl was playing in her grandparents’ backyard and Shonhayi approached and grabbed her by the hand.
He allegedly threatened to kill her if she made noise and dragged her to a sink where he took off her clothes and raped her while wearing a condom.
Shonhayi allegedly ejaculated and he threw the condom on a heap of tires, wore another one and continued raping the minor.
The minor’s grandfather came to the backyard looking for her and found Shonhayi raping her.
The grandparents then called police officers manning Serima Police Base who attended the scene.
Shonhayi was thereafter arrested.
