Harare teacher jailed 15 years for raping minor

A Harare school teacher, Aleck Masomera,57, will serve 13 effective years in prison after he was found guilty of raping his 11-year-old neighbour’s daughter.

Masomera was jailed after a full trial during which he denied allegations.

He was initially sentenced to 15 years, with two years having been set aside on condition of good behaviour.

Presiding magistrate Letwin Rwodzi said Masomera deserved a long custodial sentence because he acted contrary to what is expected of him in the community.

According to the State, Masomera was assisting the girl with extra lessons.

Court heard during trial that sometime in July last year, the minor enrolled with Masomera for extra lessons.

It is alleged that Masomera then started proposing love to the girl who turned him down.

On the day he raped the girl, Masomera entered his bedroom from where he asked the girl to enter and sit on the bed besides him.

He then raped her once before setting her free.

Masomera was then arrested after the girl reported the matter to her grandmother.
