A Chitungwiza prophet, who took a young girl as payment for cleansing a family home, in addition to two beasts, has been jailed for an effective five years.
The 18-year-old prophet threatened the family that they would perish immediately if he did not take the girl for a wife and out of fear, the family agreed.
The prophet subsequently took the girl with him before raping her twice and turning her into his wife.
Talent Samanyanga, 18, was convicted of rape after a full trial before Chitungwiza regional magistrate Gloria Takundwa, who suspended one year of the six-year sentence on condition of good behaviour.
Prosecuting, Pamela Dzinduwa told the court that in February this year, Samanyanga was hired by the young woman’s maternal grandfather at their rural home in Makore Village under Chief Samhembere.
After cleansing the homestead, Samanyanga was given two beasts, which he sold and told the grandfather than he had to take the granddaughter with him to Chitungwiza, failure of which all the family members would die.
The grandfather agreed out of fear and Samanyanga took the girl to Chitungwiza on February 14 where he raped her twice before taking her to his grandmother in Cherutombo, Marondera and introduced her as his wife.
The two spent the night there and returned to Chitungwiza where he rents a room on February 16.
On the same day at around 10pm, Samanyanga raped her again.
The two had a misunderstanding on February 17 and Samanyanga chased the young woman away from his home around 3am, resulting in her reporting the matter to the police.
Samanyanga was subsequently arrested when he followed her to the police station and was charged with rape.
