Two members of an artisanal miners’ gang were arrested after they killed a man last week a few metres from Ascot Extension shops after allegedly engaging in an argument.

The gang has been going around assaulting other patrons as well.

Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident, but said investigations were still in progress.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at around 2am on April 28 after a gang of gold panners stormed Club 04 at Ascot Extension shops and began assaulting people.

“A group of violent people who were boasting that they were Magweja started the violence in the nightclub at around 9 pm.

“Around 2 am, the same group resumed their violent acts and this time they were randomly slapping people and assaulting them with knives.

“One of them produced a knife and started stabbing the now deceased all over the body before they drove away at high speed from the shops,” he said.

The suspects reportedly tried to steal a getaway car but the tyres were shot leading to the arrest of two of the suspects while others escaped.

At least five patrons and a police officer who was on duty sustained injuries due to the attack.
