A Beitbridge man, Wellman Ncube, was remanded in custody after he appeared in court for allegedly attacking his ex-wife’s new boyfriend for merely playing with his child.
The incident, which occurred on March 17, 2023, left the victim, Robin Zhou, injured and in critical condition.
According to eyewitnesses, the fateful encounter took place at Bishopstone Farm Compound, where Zhou and Ncube’s ex-wife resided. The tension had been building up for days, and emotions reached a boiling point when Ncube witnessed Zhou playing with his child the previous evening.
“Ncube charged at him and head-butted him once, leaving Zhou startled and fleeing for safety,” said a witness who wished to remain anonymous.
However, Ncube was not done yet.
He broke into his ex-wife’s unlocked residence around 2am the next day where he found Zhou sleeping beside her.
Ncube’s rage overflowed, and he armed himself with a knife.
“The accused charged at Zhou, brandishing a knife, and inflicted two swift stabs—one below the left armpit and another on the lower left abdomen,” said a police source.
Despite the injuries, Zhou escaped but only ran approximately 50 meters before falling unconscious.
Zhou’s cries for help alerted neighbours, who contacted emergency services, leading to him being ferried to Beitbridge District Hospital and subsequently to United Bulawayo Hospital, where he underwent critical medical treatment.
A police report was filed at Beitbridge Rural Police Station, leading to the arrest of Ncube.
Magistrate Innocent Bepura has since ordered Ncube to remain in custody pending further investigation.
