Chapungu Sculpture Park to honour founder Roy Guthrie

The Chapungu Sculpture Park will hold a special exhibition tribute in honour of Chapungu Sculpture founder and patron Roy Guthrie on Friday in Msasa, Harare.

The show will feature exhibitions never been showcased, authentic Zimbabwean Stone Sculptures by the Great Masters.

Speaking to Zim Now, Chapungu Sculpture Park Creative Consultant Merilyn Mushakwe said the exhibition is a celebratory event for Guthrie for his work at Chapungu.

The exhibition will feature a tour of Chapungu’s extensive collection from the Masters of the First Generation (early 1970s) and key artists from the Second Generation to contemporary sculptures.

The programme will be graced song by Matsimba Epasi Chigare Mbira Group, followed by a tour of the Sculpture Garden and Gallery, led by world-renowned sculptors and resident artists Brian Nyanhongo, Nicholas Kadzungura and Nhamo Chamutsa.

Chapungu was founded by Roy Guthrie in 1980 and was one of the best suppliers of top-end Zimbabwean Shona sculpture and known for its international exhibitions.

Guthrie pioneered the promotion of Zimbabwe Stone Sculpture (Shona Sculpture) worldwide and has built up the most important permanent collection of this work in existence through Chapungu. 

It has one of the largest Zimbabwean Stone Sculpture collections in the world, including works from prominent artists such as Nicholas Mukomberanwa, Henry Munyaradzi, Sylvester Mubayi, Joseph Ndandarika, Boira Mteki, Bernard Matemera and John Takawira.
