A determined How Mine security manager took on an unknown number of armed robbers in a shoot-off and compelled them to abandon a truck that he had disabled. The gang also left a pistol at the scene.

Police have since confirmed that the armed robbers got away with11.9kgs  gold worth US$650 000 in three private security cash-in-transit vans that were transporting the product from How Mine to Fidelity Printers.

The 13 man gang reportedly set up an ambush by blocking the road using their three vehicles at a point about 10km from the mine and 12 km from Bulawayo CBD.

The How Mine security manager was driving behind the security company trucks and chased after the armed attackers after the heist.

He exchanged gunfire with the gang and although his vehicle took hits, he managed to drive the gang off, forcing them to abandon a Nissan Hard boy single cab and also leave a pistol on the scene.

The gang got away in a Toyota GD 6 and a Nissan March which reportedly now have bullet holes on them after the manager hit both vehicles with his gun.

An audio circulating on social media is asking the public to be on the lookout for the bullet riddled vehicles.

Cases of armed robberies have gone up around the country over the past few months. A recently ended amnesty period for people to surrender unregistered arms to police netted less than 600 guns when it is believed that Zimbabwe has over 250 000 unregistered firearms.
