Harare man loses US$36k in Toyota Fortuner import scam

Michael Mashiri

A Kwekwe man who defrauded another of US$36 000, claiming he could import a Toyota Fortuner for him but never delivered, has appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts.

Ricard Earnest Joseph, 34, residing in Newtown, appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi charged with theft of trust property.

The complainant in this matter is Rana Ghulam Ali, 38, of Belvedere.

The State, through prosecutor Zebediah Bofu, alleges that sometime in November 2019, Ali approached Joseph and asked him to import a Toyota Fortuner from South Africa for him.

Ali was then asked pay US$36 000 for the car.

Ali raised the amount and told Joseph, who drove from Kwekwe to Harare and collected the money.

He promised to deliver the car in a few weeks’ time.

After receiving the money, Joseph became evasive and started to ignore Ali’s calls.

Joseph is alleged to have vacated all the addresses that Ali knew, leading to him filing a police report against him.

As a result, Ali lost US$36 000 and nothing was recovered.

Mangosi ordered Joseph to pay US$100 as bail. He was ordered to report three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Kwekwe Central Police Station.

He will appear in court on September 5 for his routine remand.
