A US-based Zimbabwean, Tatenda “Carlie” Makarawu on Wednesday at 12:50 pm is taking on the track with the World giants in 200m men’s race at the World Championships in Budapest.
A 23-year-old qualified for the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest with the personal best of 20.10 seconds which is the National record.
In an interview with Zim Now, Makarawu said: “I am really excited to be competing with these professional athletes at World level.”
“My greatest accomplishment is just to be at the World Championships representing my country,” he added.
Makarawu achieved a number titles since 2017 which include National Under 18 champion for 200m men in 2017, COSSASSA 200m champion 2017, World Under 18 championship qualifier 2017, National Champion for 200m from 2021 and 2022, National Indoor Junior College Champion for both 60m and 200m, National outdoor junior college champion for 100m men and 2023 World Athletics Budapest Championships qualifier.
Makarawu, who was a student at Bindura University of Science Education, in August 2022 earned a two-year scholarship to New Mexico Junior College in USA and is soon transferring to complete the other two years at D1 University.
“Athletics runs in my blood, it’s a God-given talent, and it’s something that has taken me to places that I could imagine myself going. So, when I look where I came from and where I am today, that gives me no reason at all to give up now, that keeps me going, maybe God has something for me,” Makarawu told Zim Now.
