Former Cabinet minister Ignatius Chombo has retained his freedom after the State withdrew corruption charges against him.
Chombo appeared before magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa at the Harare Magistrates' Courts yesterday.
The State, through prosecutor Pardon Dziva, said they were going proceed by way of summons if they wanted the former minister.
"We are proceeding under Section 8 of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act and are withdrawing charges before plea. We will proceed with summons once we are ready," said Dziva.
The State alleged that on an unknown date, Chombo allegedly worked with Rejoice Pazvakavambwa, Psychology Chiwanga, Iben Pransisco, James Chiyangwa, Theresa Chenjerayi, Ehas Chote and L. Chimimba and forged a document which appeared to have been made on January 1, 1997, with the intention of fraudulently acquiring Subdivisions “K" Portion of Nthaba Portion of Glen Lorne from the City of Harare.
It is said the eight signed the made-up fraudulent lease agreement.
From June 25, 2004 to December 2009, Chombo and his accomplices allegedly forged documents that include a lease to buy agreement and a Capital Gains tax clearance certificate, claiming that these documents were genuine and made by the City of Harare, with the concurrence of Local Government and the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority officials.
After acquiring the fraudulent lease documents of Subdivision "K" Chombo is said to have fraudulently transferred the property in question to Alois Chimimba.
The State was also claiming that by doing so, Chombo acted in a manner contrary to his duties as a pubic officer as his actions showed favour to Chimimba.
