High level positions among 750 plus jobs on offer at careers’ fair

Employment hopefuls getting details of opportunities and some of the vacancies on offer

There is a skills gap on the market with some companies struggling to find high level workers. This came out at the job fair that kicked off today where over 750 positions are on offer.

According to statistics availed freely to all visitors at the fair, the 30 companies present need a total of 96 geologists and lab specialists.

There are openings for 300 workers in the engineering field including IT specialists, electricians, mechanics and plumbers.

The Admin field has 105 posts for Accounts, Legal, HR, Audits and CSR practitioners. The marketing, purchasing, sales and logistics segment has 60 openings.

One hundred and 196 drivers, builders and warehouse vacancies bring the total to 757 posts. Many employment hopefuls visited the fair to get information on how to apply.

“I am so happy to have heard of this opportunity. There are many young people who are just sitting at home just saying there are no jobs. I didn’t know that there are so many vacancies available,” said Leandra Munyengwa, 26, of Glen View.

Munyengwa said she is an HR graduate from a local university and has been looking for a job for two years.

Stanbic Bank Zimbabwe and the Chamber of Chinese Enterprises are hosting the fair at Stanbic Park in Borrowdale.

Prior to the official launch of the fair, organisers said over 500 CVs had been received with more expected.

“Unskilled workers knock at our doors every day looking for general placements. But when it comes to specialised skills like translators, HR experts, technicians and other jobs like that, it appears that there is a deficit on the market,” said a recruitment agent for one of the 30 companies represented.

Many skilled workers left the country over the past two decades as massive brain drain hit on the back of a shrinking economy. Zimbabwe has been witnessing an economic revival over the past three years with the World Bank and International Monetary Fund both giving cautious positive outlooks for the economy.

There is a current mining boom as the country has seen massive investment in several areas with foreign investors moving in to develop Zimbabwe’s rich resource base. Prospects for oil have also improved the country’s short and long term economic prospects.

Chamber of Chinese Enterprises vice president, Ms Shanel Liu, said that the 80-plus Chinese companies based in Zimbabwe that are members of the association employ over 100 000 locals.
