Zambia, in its capacity as Chair of the Southern African Development Community Organ on Politics, Defence and Security, this week convened a virtual extraordinary meeting which had the Democratic Republic of Congo on its agenda. Nothing was discussed about Zimbabwe and its just-ended elections.
Chaired by Stanley Kakubo, who is Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the convergence deliberated on the deployment of a Sadc Mission in the DRC and the way to address the security situation.
“In his remarks, Hon. Kakubo emphasised the need for countries in the region to work tirelessly to promote and foster peace and security as prerequisites for regional integration and social development.
“Hon Kakubo called for the usage of all platforms to condemn the upsurge of conflicts and activities of illegal armed groups, including M23 in the DRC and support provided by foreign aggression,” a statement issued by the Zambian Foreign Affairs Ministry said.
It further stated that the chair saluted the region and its people for supporting Sadc efforts to thwart terrorism, adding the decision taken at the indaba would be implemented to find a lasting solution to the DRC situation.
