Veteran educationist and lawyer, Jacob Mudenda has been duly elected as Speaker of the 10th Parliament of Zimbabwe as there were no other contestants.
The 10th Parliament comprises members of Zanu PF and the Nelson Chamisa-led Citizens Coalition for Change who got 136 elected National Assembly members and 73 respectively.
The CCC absconded from the voting.
Born in 1949, the veteran school teacher and lawyer was appointed District administrator after independence in 1980. He was promoted to Provincial Administrator and later Provincial Governor. When the position of Resident Minister was created, Mudenda was appointed Resident Minister for Matabeleland North Province.
In 2013, Mudenda was appointed chairman of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission a position he left when he was elected Speaker of Parliament. He took oath of office on September 3 of the same year, replacing Lovemore Moyo.
Mudenda was re-elected Speaker following the 2018 elections.
