The Parliament of Zimbabwe has rescinded appointments it made of Citizens Coalition for Change members of the National Assembly to parliamentary portfolio committees.
The appointments were made based on a letter that had been written by Jameson Timba, purporting to be interim leader of the CCC Party.
National Assembly Speaker, Jacob Mudenda said Timba had no “locus standi to represent a party in such a manner”.
“On reflection, I should not have acted upon that letter as facts now thereof before me show that Jameson Timba had no locus standi to represent a party in such a manner as I will outline below,” said Mudenda.
The Speaker argued that Timba had been recalled from the Senate and he had lost the challenge he mounted at the High Court under case number HCH 6684/23, along with other recalled CCC MPs.
Mudenda added that Timba was one of the CCC members who were barred from contesting the December 9, 2023 by-elections following Sengezo Tshabangu’s application to block them from participating in the polls under the CCC banner.
“Considering that Jameson Timba had been recalled by the same CCC Party he was purporting to represent, and that he was also banned by the courts from contesting under the banner of the same CCC Party, his communication to Parliament and the appointments made thereafter, are therefore null and void.
“Accordingly, I am rescinding the announcement on the 15th of February, 2024 and referring the matter back to the CCC Party to make the appropriate appointments,” said Mudenda.
The CCC has been in turmoil since the conclusion of the August 2023 Harmonised elections and then party leader abandoned the political outfit in January, alleging infiltration.
Several nominated and elected members representing the party at local authority and in Parliament have been recalled as the party continued to disintegrate along factional lines.
