A man who helped to link complainant with a person who claimed to sell cars and disappeared after receiving money for a car he never delivered, has been taken to court.
Takaruza Chibhakera, 48, of Support Unit Camp, Chikurubi, appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts facing fraud allegations.
The complainant in this matter is Runyararo Mudzimuirema, who lives in Whitecliff Phase 2, Harare.
The State, through prosecutor Zebediah Bofu, alleges that in May 2023, Mudzimuirema wanted to buy a Honda Fit.
She came across an advert on Facebook from a company called Brooklyn Motors based in South Africa and contacted Gershwin, whose WhatsApp number was given on that Facebook advert.
Gershwin confirmed that it was a genuine company and allegedly tried to convince Mudzimuirema before referring her to Chibhakera, whom he said had bought a car from their company.
On May 3, 2023, Mudzimuirema, approached Chibhakera at his workplace and he confirmed that he indeed had bought a car from Brooklyn Motors and said that it was a genuine company.
Chibhakera further assured her that he could act as her agent.
Parties signed a service level agreement in which Chibhakera carried out the liabilities over the project for any damage or loss out of his own negligence, wrongful act or omission.
After that, Mudzimuirema contacted Gershwin and was given an account number which she was supposed to deposit the money.
She then gave one Nesheni US$3 800, who then transferred an equivalent ZAR to the account.
The car was never delivered within the agreed 3 days.
After that Chibhakera became evasive.
As a result of Chibhakera’s actions, Mudzimuirema allegedly lost US$3 800 and only U$200 was recovered.
Chibhakera who was coming from home was ordered to appear in court on October 17, pending finalisation of investigations.
