A man who was part of a gang that was stealing from people in Harare CBD has been denied bail.
George Nyemba, 35, of Dzivaresekwa 2, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts accused of theft.
He was ordered to appear in court tomorrow for bail application.
The State alleges that on September 25, at around 1930 hours at Corner Robert Mugabe and Cameron Street, opposite Choppies Supermarket in Harare, the complainant was walking with his friend along Cameron Street.
They were approached by Nyemba and his four accomplices, who are still at large, and they caused a commotion and confusion when they got there.
They allegedly took advantage of that and snatched the complainant’s phone valued at US$300 and a wallet which had US$150 and disappeared in the crowd.
The State alleges that on the same day, Nyemba and his four accomplices, who are still at large, snatched the complainant’s money and phone.
The complainant managed to ambush them and manhandled Nhemba whom he dragged to Harare Central Police Station.
When he was along Robson Manyika opposite the police station, Nyemba’s accomplices manhandled the complainant and bundled him into their Honda Fit vehicle.
His legs were hanging outside the car. The complainant managed to escape after attacking one of them whom he throttled on the neck and jumped from a speeding car.
After that he reported the matter to the police.
