Experience the Rich Cultural Heritage of Yuan Zhou: Home to China's First No.1 Scholar and Oldest Observatory

“Afar as Yichun is, the landscape deserves visits.” The verse written by Han Yu, the late Prefectural Governor of Yuan Zhou, clearly describes the great legacy he left for posterity.

Built in the sixth year during the Reign of Emperor Gaozu in the Western Han Dynasty, Yuan Zhou is one of the earliest 18 counties established in Jiangxi Province.

The “Yuan” surname comes from Yuan Jing, a hermit with noble character and sterling integrity whose legend has lasted thousands of years.

Yuan Jing, traveled on his horse to Yuan Zhou where he finally felt at ease. He spent his life farming, in studying and searching for knowledge.

He played the Qin (traditional Chinese musical instrument) to attract cranes.

People find their emotions drawing them in to become part of the scenery as they climb Yuanshan Mountain, listen to the Yuanhe River and appreciate stones in Yuanzhou, as they recall Yuan Jing’s deeds.

Yuanzhou is the place of enlightenment for Lu Zhao, the first Zhuangyuan (the NO.1 scholar in Imperial Examination of ancient China) in Jiangxi Province. The Invigorated Horse S Statue has frozen the highlights for a long time.

Yuanzhou enjoys first-class poetry and is the first county with a surname, the first No.1 scholar, and the oldest astronomical observatory.

Built in 1219 during the Reign of Emperor Jiading in the Song Dynasty, Qiaolou (watchtower) is the earliest surviving local ancient observatory in the world, integrating three functions: time measurement, punctuality, and timing.

Visitors can go fishing by boat at Feijiantan Reservoir, enjoy family time in Squirrel Tribe, do agricultural research and study at Channongge, go outing in Huaxi Valley of Moon Capital, and have a barbecue and pick fruit and vegetables at Whitehorse Farm.

A must is taking a stroll in the Night Market near Gulou (Drum Tower) area to watch Nanmiao Martial Arts, and gongs-and-drums performance;

And of course one must taste crystal preserved eggs, hot and spicy Cihua chicken, delicious Binjiang beef, and tender Nanmiao tofu...

Jiangnan on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River is a land of splendors, among which Youzhou is the most memorable!
