Breakthrough in Justice: Ex-minister Mukupe Convicted in Fuel Fraud

Honourable Terence Mukupe

Former Finance and Economic Development Minister Terence Mukupe has been convicted of prejudicing the State of thousands of US dollars in a fuel scam that was, however, unearthed by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority.

He has been remanded in custody pending sentencing tomorrow, November 9.

It is the State’s case that on January 27, 2017, and at Forbes Border Post in Mutare, Mukupe, Same Kapisoriso, Joseph Taderera and Leonard Mudzuto connived and misrepresented that the diesel they were ferrying would be offloaded in the DRC.

Along the way in Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe, however, they offloaded the diesel and replaced it with water.

Using the tracker system, Zimra officials managed to intercept the accused at Chirundu One Stop Border Post to verify the nature of goods carried and were able to establish that it was water.

As a result of the former Minister and his co-accused’s actions, the State lost US$55 591-60 as potential revenue.
