The late distinguished historian and academic, who was also the founding Vice Chancellor of the Midlands State University, Professor Ngwabi Bhebhe, will be laid to rest on Saturday at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.
Prof Bhebhe died last Friday at a private medical facility in the Midlands capital of Gweru at the age of 81 and was subsequently declared a national hero.
A statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage released yesterday said the burial will be presided over by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The statement also said the late national hero’s body was taken to his home in Chiwundura where the “Chiwundura community bade farewell to their illustrious son and one of Zimbabwe’s academic heroes”.
Prof Bhebhe’s body was expected to lie in state at the family home in Gweru before being taken to the Midlands State University for a farewell church service. It will again lie in state at the Gweru family home.
The body will then be airlifted to Harare tomorrow and lie in state at the Charles Gumbo Barracks (formerly One Commando) before burial on Saturday.
