Gender Commission relaunches Magaya sexual crimes probe

Walter Magaya

Church leader Walter Magaya’s bid to foil investigation into allegations of sex crimes against him has been thrown out by the court, opening the way for the Zimbabwe Gender Commission to relaunch its investigations.

“The Zimbabwe Gender Commission wishes to advise members of the Public that … in … its meeting number 38 on the 4th of August 2022 resolved to recommence investigation of the allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse of women levelled against Prophet Walter Magaya of Prophetic Healing and Deliverance” advised the commission in a statement.

The Commission says court rulings have reopened the probe which was originally launched in 2019 but came to a stop after Magaya used legal channels to stop it.

“We are happy that the courts have given legal judgement which have paved way for the continuance of our processes. As such we are calling on all citizens who might have complaints of sexual exploitation and abuse involving the conduct of Walter Magaya to present the particulars to the commission.

Walter Magayas sex life has been a matter of interest to the public for years.

He was named in the marital breakdown of Denford Chimutashu’s marriage to Nomusa Memory Ruvazhe in 2014. Chimutashu lashed out against Magaya publicly before abruptly making an about face.

In 2019 a series of sex crimes allegations against Walter Magaya all fizzled out with alleged victims suddenly refuting their earlier statements.

Sarah Maruta told a local publication of her ordeal at the hands of Walter Magaya.

Shortly after, in a video that was released when Maruta was in Germany, she said she had been coerced as part of an extortion attempt by Enisia Mashusha.

Maruta also implicated Charity Dlodlo who had claimed to be a victim in the same interview as a Mashusha accomplice in the extortion attempt.

Dlodlo later recanted and claimed that she had made the allegations against Magaya while under the influence of other forces.

Godfrey and Molly Maenzanise claimed that Magaya had raped and impregnated their then 17-year old daughter in 2013.

The alleged Chenai Maenzanise-Hassan soon after released a video dismissing her parents’ claims.

There was talk that several senior journalists at a media house in Harare had all been part of a cover up for Walter Magaya with one journalist accused of offering a bribe to the editor of a publication that had run with the claims raised against Magaya.

ZGC took the stance that there was too much smoke to dismiss the possibility of a fire and had an investigation against Magaya gazetted in 2019.

Magaya stepped in with a legal injunction barring the Commission, which has since been throw aside by the present ruling.
