Three Zanu PF candidates have confirmed interest in the Chegutu West constituency and will face-off in primary elections to choose the party’s representative in the February 3 by-elections.
The seat fell vacant after Admire Chivero of the Citizens Coalition for Change, who had won in the August 23-24 Harmonised elections, was recalled by Sengezo Tshabangu, who claims to CCC’s interim secretary-general.
Former Member of Parliament for the constituency, Dexter Nduna is one of three that have confirmed their interest to represent Zanu PF along with Advocate Chigavazira, who lost the seat by a narrow margin to the recalled Chivero back in August.
A third candidate, Shaky Timburwa is a new entry into the fold.
Contacted for comment, Zanu PF Acting Director for Information and Publicity, Farai Marapira reiterated that the number of those vying to represent the party in the by-election is yet to be confirmed.
“Any member of the party is open to show interest and contest in the primary election.
“We are waiting for the proclamation of the by-election date by the President as well as also waiting for the commissariat to decide on the primary election date,” Marapira said.
Chegutu West falls under Mashonaland West Province with 784 230 registered voters.
Zanu PF will look to close the gap of more than 2 000 votes that separated Chivero and Chigavazira, in the August election and edge the CCC candidate in contention for that seat.
