A man, who allegedly defrauded more than US$50 000 lying to the complainant that he was a lawyer who could help in solving his case, has appeared in court.
Givemore Tapera, 46, of Mabelreign, appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts accused of fraud.
He was ordered to appear tomorrow for bail application.
The complainant in this matter is Pudurai Mazengwa, 51, of Kineton Greenroad, Solihull, United Kingdom.
The State, through prosecutor Thomas Chanakira, alleges that sometime in 2019, Mazengwa lost US$1 000 000 through fraud after engaging someone to carry out a construction project for him.
In an effort to recover his money, Mazengwa approached a friend also based in the United Kingdom, who referred him to Tapera, whom he claimed once assisted her in recovering her money.
Mazengwa, contacted Tapera through WhatsApp calls and he allegedly lied to him that he was a legal practitioner and had was able to recover his money through applications of court orders at the High Court against the person who had defrauded him.
It is alleged that Tapera convinced Mazengwa to send him money for processing the High Court orders.
Tapera then allegedly forged High Court orders, which he claimed to have been issued by the High Court in Masvingo, Mutare and Harare.
Tapera then used the forged documents to convince Mazengwa to send more money for the processing of documents.
He also lied to Mazengwa that he had attached cars and property in Mutare and requested for money to cater for the drivers, whom he said were supposed to drive the cars to Harare.
Mazengwa sent money on 24 occasions to Tapera using World Remit and on four occasions, Tapera collected money from Mazengwa’s nephew.
Mazengwa discovered the offence when he requested for registration books and title deeds of the recovered property from Tapera and he failed to give him any document.
That is when a report was filed with the police, leading to Tapera’s arrest.
As a result, Mazengwa lost US$50 930, and nothing was recovered.
