A man, who allegedly defrauded US$36 500 meant to purchase 25 000 litres of fuel, has appeared in court.

Tinashe Nyasha Makoni, of Borrowdale North, appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts accused of fraud.

He was ordered to deposit US$300 as bail and will appear in court on January 11, for his routine remand.

The State, through prosecutor Thomas Chanakira, alleges that on January 26, 2023, the complainant saw a message in a Whatsapp group advertising fuel for sale.

The complainant responded as he was interested in buying 35 000 litres of diesel for his client, Raymond Mazodze.

Makoni said he could supply the order and instructed the complainant to give him the truck details.

Complainant later revised his order to 25 000 litres and was charged US$36 500.

The complainant made the payment to Makoni and was given a document which was said to be the release document for the fuel.

The complainant sent the document to his client so that he would collect the fuel from the National Oil Infrastructure Company.

However, when the client went to collect the fuel, he was told that the release document was fake.
