We were not invited to stadium opening: Zifa Normalisation Committee

Patience Muchemwa

The Zifa Normalisation Committee has dismissed claims that its no-show at the commissioning of Walter Magaya’s The Heart Stadium in Waterfalls, Harare was not intentional, saying they instead had deep respect for President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who officiated at the event.

In an interview with Zim Now, Zifa NC chairperson Lincoln Mutasa said they were not invited to the event. “There was no intention to snub the President,” Mutasa emphasised.

“We simply weren’t part of the official guest list.” He further reiterated the committee’s deep respect for President Mnangagwa and his contribution to football development in Zimbabwe.

Mutasa’s statement sought to dispel the wave of public criticism suggesting the committee deliberately snubbed the President, instead commending the head of state for his positive influence on the sport.

The NC chairperson also highlighted the President’s instrumental role in enabling a supportive environment for football to flourish.

The Heart Stadium, constructed by Magaya, was commissioned by President Mnangagwa on Saturday.

Once approved by the Confederation of African Football, Magaya said, the stadium will be open for use by Zimbabwe’s representatives in continental tournaments, Ngezi Platinum FC and Dynamos. He added that it was also open for use by the Warriors, who were forced to play their home matches in Rwanda last month due to the unavailability of CAF-approved stadiums in the country.
