A frenzy gripped two Gweru suburbs - Cowfold Park and Mtausi - over the weekend as news of alleged gold deposits sparked a gold panning rush. The Zimbabwe Republic Police swiftly intervened, confirming the situation is now under control.
Reports indicate the rush began after discovery of potential gold deposits, attracting hordes of eager prospectors who descended upon the residential areas. This chaotic scene prompted concerns over security and environmental damage.
The ZRP, along with the Environmental Management Agency and the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, quickly stepped in to contain the situation. Their joint efforts, in collaboration with stand owners, have successfully calmed the frenzy and restored order.
“Authorities have taken control of the situation,” the ZRP stated in a statement, adding that “three suspects have been arrested in connection with this case.”
Details of the charges preferred against the suspects haven’t been disclosed yet.
The incident highlights the allure of gold and the potential economic desperation that can fuel such rushes. Authorities face the ongoing challenge of balancing responsible mineral exploration with protecting both the environment and residents’ safety.
Further investigations into the gold claims and potential mining permits in the area are likely to follow.
