The 2023 festive period road crashes have reduced in number and fatalities but seen a jump in the number of injured people as compared to 2022.

The police said that this year 87 people died in 60 fatal crashes compared to 102 dead in 71 crashed in 2022.

But conversely the number of injured people went up to 424 compared to 289 in 2022.

The total number of crashes was down to 1194 compared to 1480 in the same period last year.

Driver error remains the biggest factor in road crashes.

“Most of the road traffic accidents occurred on highways as a result of speeding, inattention, overtaking errors, overloading, misjudgement, following too close and recklessness on the part of drivers,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.
